China to US: We're Not Stealing Your Secrets

Beijing on Monday criticized a U.S. government report that said Chinese spies are aggressively stealing American secrets, saying the report was “full of prejudice” and warning that it could damage US-China relations.

The annual report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission to lawmakers said last week that American officials believe Chinese spying is “growing in scale, intensity and sophistication” and urges Congress to review the U.S. ability to meet the “rising challenge” of Beijing’s espionage.

The report “ignores the facts and is full of prejudice and ulterior motives,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

“We advise this so-called commission not to always view China through tinted glasses,” Qin said. “Do not do things that interfere in China’s internal affairs and damage China-US relations.”

140 killed in Xinjiang riot

China said a riot that shook the capital of the western Xinjiang region killed 140 people and the government called the ethnic unrest a plot against its power, signalling a security crackdown.

Locals took to the streets of the capital, Urumqi, some burning and smashing vehicles and confronting ranks of police and anti-riot troops.

The death toll from yesetrday’s riot has risen to 140, the semi-official China News Agency quoted Li Zhi, the Communist Party Boss of Urumqi City, as telling a news conference today.

Since the crew of Apollo 17 returned from the moon in December 1972, no human has ever left low-Earth orbit. Five space shuttles, scores of Russian Soyuz capsules, the International Space Station, and more than 450 men and women have left the Earth since Apollo, but all have been bound to a small shell of space just outside our atmosphere.

Any hope of an ambitious successor to Apollo might have been abandoned altogether if it wasn’t for George W Bush. In 2003, he announced plans for Nasa to return to the moon by 2020 and then travel on to Mars by 2030. Once again, though, the US faces some serious competition. The same year that Bush tasked Nasa with the 21st century moonshot, Yang Lee Wei became China’s first astronaut and, explicit or not, another space race had begun.

he Dalai Lama on Sunday called for an international probe of China’s treatment of Tibet, which he said is causing “cultural genocide” of his people.

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet spoke at a news conference Sunday in Dharmsala, India, two days after violent clashes between pro-autonomy demonstrators and Chinese security forces in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

A spokesman for the Tibetan exile government said it has confirmed at least 80 deaths in Friday’s violence and that protests were continuing outside the capital on Sunday, further undermining China’s hopes of a smooth run-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Tibet Watch, a group based in Daramsala, India, told CNN that 34 people have died in the Nwaga County area of Sichuan province in western China.

The dead include women and children, the group said in an e-mail, adding they were killed by Chinese police attempting to stop the protests.
